Public Relations - How to find customers

If you are thinking of setting up as a freelance PR consultant, the most important thing is you're going to need customers! This article will explain the best way to go about getting them.

In fact, finding customers who can benefit from their services as a consultant for public relations is not a difficult task. The entire process of attracting clients can be summarized as follows ...

1. Write a letter to the 'master' file describing the service you are offering. Point out to the reader how effective a public relations consultant can be in raising the profile of an individual, a corporation or a specific range of products and services.

2. Create a list of companies, individuals or organizations that you think would benefit more from having you as a PR consultant. You will probably find that your personal interests to attract certain types of customers. For example, if you're an avid player of computer games, you might want to get closer to game developers. Or, if you love music then you may prefer to approach up-and-coming musicians, bands and so on.

3. Now send a copy of your letter to master for each potential customer on your list. Of course, you should change each letter to be directly relevant to the customer in question, but most of the text will be the same in all cases, thus creating the first letter Master (saves getting a bad case of RSI typing the same things over and over again!).

All you can do now is wait until the phone rings. In the meantime, create another list of potential customers and repeat the whole process. Remember, success comes to those who try, try and try again. If your first mailing fails, do not stop. Just target potential customers and keep going until you succeed.

Of course, there is another way to attract customers in your locality, and this is ... write a press release! Write a piece about how effective PR consultants may be that higher public profiles of local businesses and individuals. Tell the readers how PR consultants have helped other companies and individuals to become more successful. Then tell them (in the third person, of course) as you have just launched a PR consultancy that is currently accepting new clients. Finally, complete the part by entering your data.

Once you have done this you can send your press release to all local newspapers. If your press does its job, the details of your service will soon be in print for all to see, and should not be long before the second customer (you were right the first client, do not forget!) Get in touch .. .....
