Prince2 Project Management explained!


PRINCE2 project management methodology is a process-based project management method which contrasts with the methods of reactive / adaptive developed by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC). PRINCE2 defines 45 separate sub-processes and organizes these into eight processes as follows:

Starting a Project (SU)

In this process the project team is appointed and a project brief (describing what the project is to achieve and the business justification for it) is prepared. In addition the overall approach to be taken is decided and the next phase of the project is expected. Once this work is done, the project board is asked to authorize the next phase, to start the project.

Planning (PL)

Method of management projects PRINCE2 supports the planning-based product which means that the first task in which the schedule is to identify and analyze the products. Once the tasks required to create these products are identified then it is possible to estimate the effort required for each and then schedule activities into a plan. There is always the risk associated with any work and this must be analyzed. Finally, this process suggests how the format of plans can be agreed and ensures that the plans were completed in this format.

Starting a Project (IP)

This process is based on the work of Start Up (SU) activity and the project brief is then form a Business Case. The approach adopted to ensure the quality of the project is agreed with the overall approach to the control of the project. Project files are also created as a comprehensive plan for the project. A plan for the next phase of the project is also created. The result can be submitted to the Project Board for them to authorize the project itself.

Directing a Project (DP)

These sub-processes dictate how the Project Board should control the overall project. As mentioned previously, the project board can authorize an early stage and may also authorize a project. Directing a Project also known as card project should authorize a stage plan, including a plan for training, which replaces the existing plan stage due to slippage or other unforeseen circumstances. Also covered is the way the Council can give direction to an ad hoc project and the way in which a project should be closed.

Controlling a stage (CS)

PRINCE2 project management method is proposed that projects should be divided into stages and these sub-processes dictate how each stage should be controlled. Basically, this includes the manner in which packets are allowed to work and received. It also specifies the way in which progress should be monitored and how the highlights of progress must be reported to the Board of the project. A means to capture and assess the issues of the project is proposed together with the manner in which the corrective actions to be taken. It also establishes the method by which certain project issues should be raised to the project form.

Delivery of Product Management (PM)

This process consists of three sub-processes and these cover the way in which a work package should be accepted, executed and delivered.

Managing stage boundaries (SB)

Controlling a Stage process requires what should be done in a stadium, stage management Boundaries (SB) imposes what should be done towards the end of one phase. Most obviously, the next step should be planned and the program's overall project risk log and business case amended as necessary. The process also covers what should be done to a phase that has gone outside its tolerance levels. Finally, the process requires as the end of the first phase should be reported.

Closing a Project (CP)

This covers things that should be asked at the end of a project. The project should be formally de-commissioned (and resources freed up for allocation to other activities), follow the actions must be identified and the project itself be formally evaluated.
